Letter from Birch & family

Just to let you know that our little man is a wow with the ladies, they all love him and he is such a handsome boy! Settling down slowly after 6 months, like most Irish men he likes to talk and drink beer, wine or anything left around. He has a sweet loving nature but is still wary of men - although he did sleep in Granddad's lap last week! He loves lots of cuddles and kisses and Bella our other BC adores him but quite often ends up thrown into the bushes. Although she is bigger, Birch has an amazing spring in his legs and the ability to side swipe her. She is forever nipping his nose and legs in an atempt to get him to chase her. They are lovely to watch together and we are glad we made the choice to take on Birch. We welcome any information on his sister Blossom and often wonder how she is doing and if she is as gorgeous as he is. Here he is at Xmas with his bow tie on.

Dear Sarah and Paul.

Just wanted you to know how George is doing so far, we chose to rename him Jazz as he responded to it and I preferred it to George. He travelled home beautifully and seems quite content to just relax in the boot of the car, he loves his travel crate and we use it when visiting my parents, Tia and Fly to give him somewhere safe to hide. He is extremely nervous and loud noises and people walking behind him on his walks scare him, I think with a bit of time his confidence will improve and this will get easier for him.

We haven't had a moments problem with him and Tia and Fly, the only time Tia has snapped at him has been when he got too close to her bed. We expected this and it hasn't caused a problem. In fact we are all astonished at how well he has been accepted by Tia, and we are incredibly proud of how well she has done. On his walks he does growl at any other dog (except Tia and Fly!) however I think he will get past this in time, he has no confidence yet and I think his nerves get the better of him.

The other day we were visiting my parents and my brother came in, as Jazz wasn't expecting anyone to come through the door he flipped out and barked and snapped at him, again I believe this will get better in time I think he hates surprises and doesn't like to feel crowded. If you have any ideas on how we can manage this I would love to hear them. At the moment we are using his travel crate so he has somewhere he feels safe. It has taken over a year to get Tia to the point where she is OK with strange men, so I can't see it being a problem with time, patience and love. His intense dislike of the Vet may take longer!

Please let his old family know that he is happy and loved. I've attached a couple of photos of him relaxing on the sofa, he snores and makes some very funny noises when he is sleeping. He has already started to put on a bit of weight and I have found that he is a cuddle monster!

I hope that all the other dogs that you have find new homes soon, they were all so lovely, And thank you so much for spending so much time with us to make sure we got the right dog.

Hi Sarah and Paul

Thought it was about time we let you know how Bob is getting on.
As you can see from the picture hes a happy and settled dog now who loves his cuddles and his home comforts and his family. Everyone says what a lovely dog he is, we agree.

He loves his off lead walks and runs for miles going back to every tree/area where he saw the squirrel last time, when hes at home he spends most of his time at the top of the garden waiting for squirrels in the oak tree endless fun!

He's better in the car now but were still taking it slowly to build up his confidence as he gets sick were longing to take him to a beach.

Hope all is well with you both and the dogs, were surprised we don't see Barbara and Banjo as she only lives round the corner to us.

Dear Paul and Sarah,

It has been a few months now since we adopted “Patch” (who has now been renamed “Moss”) and we just wanted to update you on his progress and send you some photographs. Moss has coped exceptionally well with the transition from Wiccaweys life to his new life in Lancashire from the moment we put him in the car to come home! He has taken to life with us like a duck to water, staying in the office with Ken during the day and investigating lots of new places on his walks in the evenings. His training is coming on in leaps and bounds (sometimes more literally than we would like!), he runs off the long line now, fetches, does his doggy business on command and has even started doing some basic agility in the fields at home. His adopted brother Max has accepted Moss as part of the family, and the pair is regularly together play fighting or playing ball (although it has to be said that Moss does have an unfair advantage over Max, given that he can actually see the ball!) Max has even tried to impart some of his (minimal!) herding knowledge onto Moss, although neither of them quite have the finesse of a working sheepdog!

Hopefully the following photographs will be able to tell you more about his happy new life than I ever could!

Dear Sarah and Paul,

Further to my e-mail, here are some pics of Robin to show how well he’s settled in (i.e. is taking over our lives) since we collected him from Wiccaweys a year last Sunday. As you can see, he’s making a bid for the sheepskin rug in the living room even though he’s got his own: he made a beeline for it the moment he walked in through the door when we first got him home.

He’s an absolute delight, full of energy so first thing in the morning he wants a chase with his Kong or tuggy, then food, then a walk rounding up the local squirrels (enough to drive a collie mad when your flock keep shinning up a tree!). Then a quick rest, up to the horse’s paddock and walk, and over the jumps, then food then games and so it goes on.

We’re enjoying to get to know his little quirks. He loves the hair dryer and will come and lie beside me and turn over with his legs in the air wanting a tickle. He’s got used to the hoover and the lawnmower (though he’s still fascinated with them, dare I say typical boy?). He’s not too keen on bikes that come too close, but we’re working on that. He’s been a star in his Good Citizen class and has just been awarded his gold certificate. He’s pretty fearless and willing to give everything a go. He’s mad about agility, though still wildly excited so we’re having some private coaching to help me keep up with him. He’s also had fun with a flyball taster, and picked up treading on the lever very quickly. He loves ‘helping’ in the kitchen and will sit at my feet hoping to pick up a piece of carrot or another delicacy.

So far he has helped himself to the top of a rhubarb crumble and investigated crab apple pulp in a jelly bag (he didn’t like that much), luckily with no ill effects. As he’s good at stealing from the rich (us) and giving to the poor (him), we’ve christened him ‘Robin Hood’ and are looking out for a matching green collar and lead instead of his red ones (any in stock?)!
We had a lovely time taking him on holiday to the Isle of Wight, and introduced him to the beach and sea which he loved.

As you can see we’re cracked on him and so thank you once again for matching us up! Thanks to everyone else who helped him on his way (home-checking us and fostering him), we hope they’ll enjoy the pics.

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you know how Scooby is getting on.

He's settled into life with us really well, especially seeing as he spends some weeks with Ben and some coming to Harrogate with me, so lots of travelling but he is excellent in the car - he just falls asleep. He also seems very happy to spend time at either location as whenever he arrives he runs about excitedly sniffing every inch. Although we still have to keep a close eye on him when a man he has not met approaches. He still often grows and barks at older men who don't have a dog or children with them. Although once he's given them a good sniff and they have rubbed his belly a few times he is fine with them.

We adopted Tara about 18 months ago now, aged about 4 or 5 years.

Tara was rescued from a farm on Ireland where she had been chained up for chasing the chickens. We will never know what actually happened to her.

She did not know much of anything really. To me she seemed quite nervous, cowering at some things. At first she would not play with any ball or toys! She now plays with a tennis ball in the garden and I still encourage a ball when out on walks, but to no avail. I think there are too many interesting smells which she would rather investigate. However, she is still nervous of squeaky toys, so we don’t bother any more as they seem to stress her out too much. She picked up basic commands like sit, wait, leave, stay within a few months. Although, if there was another dog around she would not listen to commands at all!

I introduced a whistle not long ago to help with her recall – she grasped this very quickly – who said you cannot teach an old dog new tricks.

At first she was extremely feisty with other dogs, to say the least. She would not let them get anywhere near her. She would go down on all fours and started shaking or lunge and nip. The first few months were difficult. Dog walkers used to see us coming and walk the other side of the road. I felt a bit alienated, some comments were uncalled for. I should have got a T-Shirt that read “I didn’t do this to this dog”. To me, if any think, it was fear. My husband did wonder if we should throw in the towel, I suggested we tried a local trainer. Their only answer was to muzzle her. I did not want to do this as I believed she was not a nasty dog, she needed a chance in life and I was not going to give up on her.

I took a few steps back and thought about what Paul had said at the Wiccaweys “Understand your Collie Talks” and that was to find out what was right for Tara. This was invaluable advice. "What works for one dog may not work for another."

We got a long lead which we christened “Purple Ronnie” so we could give her a good run around on walks.

As time went on she would let dogs get closer and was happy to let them sniff her. She is fine with the majority of dogs that she meets now, but is still not keen on dogs bounding up to her, its as if to say “I’m a lady mind your manners”.

Yes she is a border collie. Yes she is a rescue dog, but first and foremost she is Tara. I would not be without her for the world.

She is a sweet girl, calm, patient and gentle. She makes me laugh with her little noises as she tries to talk to us. Her snuffles and sneezes after her rolls on the lawn. She adores sunshine – she will always find the sunniest spot even if it’s the size of an orange and plonk herself down.

When we are out walking, if there is a puddle on the pavement, then she will always walk around it, not through it; “I’m a lady! I don’t like to get my feet wet”. Hee, hee LOL!!

She follows me wherever I go and gets a bit worried if I’ve gone into another room and she has not realised – she comes looking for me.

Tara has made tremendous progress and it has been hard work with a dog that has had a difficult past, but gaining her trust and love has been brilliant and continues to be.

Thank goodness there are super people like Sarah & Paul and all who help at Wiccaweys, so that rescued dogs can be given another chance at life and find the LOVE that they deserve.

Dear Auntie Sarah and Uncle Paul

I have nearly been in my home a week and am really part of the family. My mum has put in some pictures. I have really found my feet and am really very energetic and full of mischief. I like to borrow things, pens, shoes, Rosie's spoons and by mistake tried to eat Joey's homework when I was helping him.

I have decided that cars are very interesting and shocked my mum when I tried to bite one so we are working on that, i found that carrying a tuggie toy helps me to focus less on the cars. I have also found a lot of fun in digging all the water out of the bowls outside and running off with the water buckets. We enjoy our nightly walks and have to get up early before mum goes to work and I walk with 3 to 4 other dogs at a time.

During the day I go for a walk along side the pram and feel the need to kiss Rosie at every opportunity when my mum stops. I have helped maintain the rug in the lounge by pulling out some unwanted threads and love clothes, in fact I love them so much I enjoy trying to pull them off my family, again we are working on this.

My mum is so in love with me that we all snuggle on the sofa and have loadsa kisses despite all the fun and mischief I am a really loving boy and enjoy nothing more than kissing all my family. I lay on the floor with two year old Rosie and give her gentle kisses, Joey get jumped on as hes older and more exciting, mum is training us both to be calmer.

Will keep you posted on my progress.

Mum says thank you so much for giving her an amazing collie boy that has made the family more complete.

We would all like to say a huge thank you, all the dogs had a great time playing with yours. All are fast asleep at the moment. Campbell now known as Sproket has fitted in so well you would think he has been here all his life not just a few hours. So far Zero has been really chilled with him and they have been playing really nicely. Sid still doesnt like him but we are going to be working on that so its not an issue, we have been there before with Shadow and Sid. Sprocket is such a snuggle bear and has taken a liking to stealing Christmas decorations. He is a really amazing dog, thank you thank you.

Dear Sarah and Paul,
David and I adopted Robin from Wiccaweys about a year ago. He's settled here very well (i.e., is now running the household while seeming to be terribly obedient). He's still after 'my' sheepskin rug, even though he's been given one of his own...Also he's much admired as he loves people, so I tell everyone he's from Wiccs and encourage them to get in touch with you if they are hoping to adopt a collie (hope they make the
grade). Sarah noted Robin had two white mischief spots on his back end and he's lived up to them-best achievement so far eating the top off a rhubarb crumble without touching the rhubarb (luckily with no ill effects-we lock everything up now ...). We hardly need to use the hoover as he's very thorough ...

He's got his Gold Good Citizens award, and is doing heelwork to music (came top of the class in his progress test), obedience Gold Plus and agility at UpnOver Club at Upper Heyford, and had a flyball taster that he loved. We're so grateful to have had the opportunity to adopt him! Thank you so much.

It's been great following the progress of all the dogs (especially those with you at the same time as Robin) and seeing them get good homes-especially little Chip, as he was. One day I hope to get up and help with the walking and bring Robin back to see everyone, but it may have to wait till spring ...!
I promise a fuller letter and pics very soon- but this is just to say, if you need a home-checker in the Oxford area, I'd love to help.

Hello Swift here. Well I have finally got my Personal Assistant (Mum) to send you some recent photos. I have been here 18 months now and am thrilled to bits with my new owners. It seems like a long time ago that I arrived here looking like an Irish tramp. Now I am handsome and sleek. Mam brushes me every day. I lie on my side with my eyes shut when she brushes me. Mam says I am a big soft lump!!! I have a friend Henry who I meet most days in the woods and we tear around together. Dad says I can't half shift for a dog who had two broken legs! 'Swift' seems a strange choice of name for a dog who had both back legs broken, but for some reason it never occcured to them at the time! It was not meant to be ironic! Hope you like the photos. Hi Paul & Sarah.

We have had Indy for just over a year now,and thought it was a good time to give you an update.

From a very timid dog who wouldn't leave my side around the house and whilst out walking, he now is very confident and will happily run on ahead, but always checks to make sure he knows where I am! He loves to chase squirrels and goes on squirrel patrol every day during his walk around the park, this is about the only time he barks!

Unfortunately he had a shoulder injury in August and had to have an operation, but thankfully he is now fully recovered and getting his fitness back. The vet is very impressed with his recovery. It was hard giving him restricted walks for a few weeks though.

His personality is now coming to the fore and he such a character always amazing us with his antics and his loving nature, he is certainly one of the family now, and couldn't imagine life without him.

Our old retriever Molly sadly died earlier this year, so Indy is now top dog and seems content to be on his own. When the time is right we will very likely paying you a visit to get him a companion, but for now it's just us and Indy and we love him to bits!

I have attached a photo of him that we took on a day out in Dartmoor.

Dear Paul and Sarah,

We just wanted to give some news on Millie. She has been an absolute star and is the sweetest dog we have ever met. She has been quite timid and scared of cars and people on our walks but is getting braver by the second. We just got back from a long walk and she is snoring on her blanket as we speak. She has mastered the stairs and came up to our bedroom at 6.45 this morning to let us know that it was time to get up. She is eating and drinking well and has put next door's dog in his place. She is fine with him while we are out on a walk but she will let him know who owns this house if he is taking liberties :) She has had a bath, which she did not enjoy but she is all lovely and fluffy now.

Thanks for letting us adopt her, we just love her to bits! We will keep you posted on her progress.

Hi Sarah and Paul

Just thought I'd drop a quick line to let you know how Mitts is doing, I will send some photo's separately as it doesn't seem to want to send with attachments.

We are really enjoying Mitts, she is a lovely dog with a really cute and Querky personality. We call her our 'little Princess'. She is a proper lady and it shows when we are out and about with her buddy Sox. He's the 'proper boy' rough and tumble, over the top etc, Mitts puts him in his place though. The two of them love playing together but she is the gentler one when out, she likes to skinny dip whilst he 'bomb dives', she likes to pitter patter along whilst he charges by !! A lovely combination.

Mitts has learnt her recall very quickly by whistle and also knows her name, she was kept on the long lead for walks for about 4 weeks but we are now confident that she isn't going anywhere. She's still on the lead for some outings involving trips to the Peak District as she has an extremely powerful herding instinct. Mitts tries to round up anything that moves and often circles us on walks. She is still very noise sensitive and quite nervous but this is gradually improving as we give her lots of reassurance.

We are really pleased to have Mitts, we and the kids love her to bits and she is a real pleasure to have in the family.

My names Dan and I was adopted back in October 2009 to a family in Soutill, Bedfordshire.
I thought you would be pleased to hear that I'm living life to the full and am particularly enjoying my flyball career [Mum says i'm a bit of an addict!!]
I compete with a team called HighFlyers, there are about 5 Wiccaweys adoptees in our club and we have a great time at tournaments, camping and socialising!

Yesterday, I qualified for Crufts 2012 and thought you would like to see me with my pretty rosette! Unfortunately the Kennel Club wouldn't let me have the name Wiccaweys DannyBoy - so my registered name is Diddy DannyBoy, perhaps you can look out for me in March at Crufts?

Dear Paul and Sarah,

Maisie (formerly Gillian) has settled very happily in her new home; she gets on famously with Jamie, whom she continues to energise and sometimes even surprise him.

Maisie has three window ledges in the house, from which she can survey the village and guard us. She gets very excited when the Oxford or Banbury bus goes past ............... and the tractors and lorries. Passing villagers are now getting used to seeing her in her ‘vantage point’ and this morning she certainly brightened up a lady’s day, judging from the smile on her face.

Maisy sallies forth into the neighbouring fields every day and has discovered the pleasure of pheasants in the hedges and open fields, thanks to Jamie’s mentoring. After the initial excitement of setting out, she is walking well, enjoying plenty of sniffing and the occasional attempt to freshen herself up with some fragrant eau de fox or badger.

She likes to start the day with a cuddle and a little chat from her mum or dad : she is a veritable bundle of joy and a lovely addition to the whole family.

Letter from Teeka & Tara (now Pippa) & family

Dear Paul and Sarah,
Thought I'd give you a quick update on Teeka and Tara (renamed Pippa). They are both in very good form, Pippa has put on 4 kilos and has grown enormously, she's now about the same height as Teeka! They love their 2xday walks on the beach,, and are ball mad. Pippa loves the sea and has even been swimming and retrieving the ball!- she is totally fearless !! Teeka is a bit more wary but does paddle. Apart from kennel cough we've had no problems and my older two got it the worst. I'm just about to start agility with Teeka and am already doing obedience with Pip. She is a totally different dog away from the others, very subdued, which she isn't at all at home, infact as soon as
she felt better a yip appeared!!! I thought it would be good to get her confidence up on her own. All the dogs get on really well, and Teeka and Tara are brilliant with the chickens and cat and are now fully house trained.

In fact we are still delighted with them!!

Thanks for the invite to the fun day - I would have loved to come but Pip is still car sick on longish journeys so thought it would be too far for her - hopefully you'll have another one in the future that we can come to.

Dear Sarah and Paul,

It is six weeks since I collected Meryl from Wiccaweys. She really is a lovely,friendly dog. I have had minor poblems with her, such as digging up my lawn, but she will grow out of this. She is good on the lead,and I can now let her off the lead in the fields. She will only go around 30 yards away from me,and will come back immediately when called. She is very,very fast.

She is very friendly with people and other dogs. Everyone who sees her wants her. One lady said to me the other day 'your dog smiled at me yesterday' ,and no doubt she
did, because she is such a happy dog. I only have to look at her and she wags her tail.

I can only think that she was a failed farm collie,because no-one in their right mind would part with such a lovely dog as Meryl.

I cannot thank you enough for this lovely lovely dog.
Please keep up the excellent work that you are doing, making both dogs and people happy. In mine and Meryl's case very, very happy.

Hi Paul & Sarah,

Poppy has settled in well. We’re talking long walks every day, exploring the various parks, with my dad and his dog Jessie. The two dogs get on well, and Poppy is well behaved off lead ranging a short distance ahead with Jessie. Poppy especially likes walks through woodland. It is a pleasure to see her bouncy and uninhibited as she bounds through the woods, as she is cautious verging on timid much of the time. The circle of people she trusts is gradually expanding to include the wider family. We’ve been practicing sit and down, and Poppy has discovered the joy of chasing after a ball. We’re having a lot of fun.

She’s coming out of her shell, and is now perfectly happy trotting out of the house into the garden. Each day I’ve been introducing new experiences, yesterday’s biggie was a walk round the block, today was the vets. On the walk yesterday she met the postman, and two neighbours who made a fuss of her. She was happy in the vets although there was a little stretch of busy road we had to walk along to get there, which she wasn’t so happy about. I gave her some time to sit, listen and watch the traffic, then she was ok. My dad’s border collie, Jessie, has come to stay with us for a while. Jessie has shown Poppy where the best couch grass grows in my garden, and has demo’d some of the toys that Poppy didn’t know what to do with. Poppy is learning fast.

Hi Paul & Sarah,

I was just about to call you and let you know how day 1 with Trixie has been, when I realised I’d missed your office hours, so I thought I’d email instead since we’ve had such a great day today.

I’ve decided to call her Poppy, since she wasn’t responding to Trixie, but was listening when I did the pup-pup-pup-puppy call. Puppy, Poppy, Puppy, Poppy. It’s working and she’s responding to her name J

Poppy was very timid when we got home and we had a couple of accidents in the house which I’ve cleaned up without a fuss. She’s least comfortable in the garden and refuses to step outside (so I’ve been carrying her over the threshold). Anyway we’ve been out in the garden lots of times today, and each time she’s been braver, done more sniffing and isn’t sticking so close to me. This afternoon she even relaxed enough to do her business in the garden, which I’m particularly happy about J Little breakthrough this evening was that after coming indoors, having had a fun time in the garden, I turned around and went straight back out again and she followed me over the threshold without hesitation. I think carrying her outside will be a thing of the past very soon.

In the house she’s very relaxed unless she has to move. She’s identified lots of chairs/sofas/etc around the house which are safe havens and if she has to move (because I’ve moved to another room in the house) she does it in a dash. This too is becoming less of a thing as she gains confidence.

This morning my dad and his dog Jessie came to visit, which was a great success. She charmed my dad in much the same way as she charmed me. I’ve attached a photo taken this morning after dad’s visit.

I’ll be on the phone straight away if we have any problems, otherwise I’ll drop you another email in a week to let you know how we’re doing.

Thankyou so much for our darling boy Ziggy he is an absolutely beauty, we arrived at the vet and you would have thought he had been with us forever, he was so good.

We then came home and let him wonder all over the garden etc, before his first bath.

I have enclosed some photos for you and as you can see he isn't phased by anything at all, in fact I think he likes his new home what do you think ?

Paul and Sarah,

He is doing well and has really settled in, he has formed a good frienship with Flynn mainly but we found him curled up in bed with Murphy one morning. He and Flynn play a lot, tug of war is a favourite.

We are walking him off lead throught he fields already, his recall is very good and he is learning the whistle command from the others. His stamina is low so we are taking it easy, building slowly, he should be getting to 35 minutes at his age but cannot manage that yet, as soon as he looks to be tiring we pop him on the lead. He is eating well and is converted to Oscar's as Flynn is but we give Buddy a half an feed extra at lunchtime. His appetite is very strong. We will try the csj food next time, looks good from the website.

He is a great character and is part of the household now, he did his first obedience training on Wednesday and was good for a first effort.

My guess would be that he was raised alone by a woman, his first instinct is to go to Imelda or women but he is not afraid of men so has not been mistreated. He loves his cuddles and I am spending more time with him over the weekend so he is more used to me, having said that he lays with me in the evening happily.

Hi,

He has had quite a day, been out in the car with his new brothers, watched Flynn at Flyball (barked encouragement), went to his new Grandad's (my father) and played in his large garden. Then a trip to Jollye's to be kitted with new collar, lead, harness and ID tag (the loan collar will be on its way back to you tomorrow, many thanks) then back home to watch me add a rail to the bottom of our 2 gates (he showed an ability to limbo dance last night, now he can't!!). He has had a very short run in the fields late this afternoon, all in all he has settled in very quickly indeed, my father was amazed at him.

He is very affectionate to men and shows no symptoms of mis treatment, he bonded with my Dad instantly (he is our normal dog sitter, if needed). He is a real character and the bond with Flynn is already very strong, they play and rest well together, last night all 3 dogs settled down cuddled up. He is an accomplished thief when it comes to food stuff, we need to have our wits about us, this is no issue to us, is quite amusing, we will adapt to minimise his opportunities.

Hi,

The first night passed peacefully, all 3 together, and Buddy was clean except for a liitle leak on teh way to the door first thing. Flynn and Buddy have been playing for over an hour now, think they are bonding really well, Murph is enjoying a peaceful lay in watching.

So far so good the play is hysterical to watch, Buddy does not let Flynn's size put him off!! He launches his whole body at him!!

Buddy will be coming to watch his brother do flyball shortly, he wont be partaking until the obedience training is well under way

Our obedience trainers rushed over to see him last night and were amazed that he was soon stretched out upside down at our feet. No doubt it will not all be plain sailing but all in all a perfect start from the young chap.

Dear Paul and Sarah,

Just to let you know that Peggy has settled very well and is a delightful little lady who gets on well with everyone she meets including our two grand-daughters aged 6yrs and 15mths, who have been staying over half term. As you can see from the attached photos she has made herself at home! She is now finally, able to be introduced to the local neighbourhood dogs having at last got rid of her persisitant kennel cough, we were sorry to miss the sponsored walk because of this.

Our only hurdle now is to get over car sickness which is making poor Peggy not enjoy any trips out even if there are great walks and nice people at the other end. Any tips would be welcome.

We hope to visit you and return the collar Peggy had from you as soon as I am quite sure she is completely over the cough.

Thank you again for your help in finding such a lovely little girl.

Hi Paul and Sarah,

I thought you might be interested to know how I am getting on in my new family home in Hampshire. I have been here for 4 weeks now and my how the time has flown. I think Phil and Jackie would say I settled down very quickly and I have been on my best behaviour except for the odd shoe or slipper that I have taken a fancy to. I can still see them but they seem to be very high up!

I loved my warm and comfy crate from the beginning and I sleep so well there, even sneak off sometimes for a bit of peace and quiet. I have lots of toys and just love to play, especially with my ball and all my chewy things. Phil and Jackie play quite well and think its so funny when I race around the garden at top speed. I am being very inquisitive - there so many things that take my fancy - dogs, cats, squirrels and birds oh and falling leaves.

I love to go socialising and training with lots of other puppies and Phil and Jackie would agree that I knock spots off them and generally I am doing very well. I've made loads of friends and they all love me, but I am so adorable and turn on the charm for everyone. The children come quite often and want to be my playmates, but Jackie makes sure I am calm around them as they can be a bit scary!

Meal times are great and interesting sometimes in my bowl or kong, which I love and sometimes around the garden, but I am clever enough to find it and never leave a scrap. All in all life is pretty good and certainly interesting and I think Phil and Jackie would agree.

Thank you for finding me a lovely new home.

I thought I would update all those interested on the summer that has just gone. Laurel and the family have been on our travels unfortunately it has coincided with a rapid increase in the pain from Arthritis in my knee which has slowed me down a fair bit and meant we have not been to walk the dogs at Wiccs as much as I would have liked but I won't lie and my focus has been on Laurel as he's my buddy and makes me happy.

It's been a great year with him and we have been off travelling the UK, the year started badly with a big bout of depression (long term sufferer) knocking me for six but Loz was there for me, he forced me through it by motivating me to get out and about although sometimes in a daze. This was great and we did a lot of exploring locally (Northampton) and found some wonderful quiet little spots to let our hair down.

Then we visited the New Forest for the first time, what a place stunning for dog walking and as it was March not too busy and a lovely hotel that accepts dogs, after discovering the New Forest well we were to be there as often as we could, Easter we camped, July August we caravanned and late August we camped again. We just loved the walks and just the whol;e atmosphere (not too remote/ not too busy).

The walks were fantastic and Laurel loves water so he was happy in the sea in the morning and the rivers/ponds in the afternoon.

Another trip camping to Leicester and another wonderful night, Laurel becoming a big camping fan now that he has worked out that we are actually in something and not in the middle of a field as he did the first time when bouncing off the tent walls.

Then a trip down to Bath for another camping weekend and more water and walks, lovely camp site, plenty round about to see and do.

A stay in Weymouth with my parents allowed Laurel more time at the seaside.

Finally we have just got back from a hotel in the Cotswolds where again Laurel found a lovely stream to splash along in the lovely village of Lower Slaughter.

So all in all a very busy summer (skint now) Laurel has been wonderful throughout, he's a very independent dog but does like to know where his flock is and keep us in order, if we are lucky we get a nice lean but if we step out of line he does get all upset and gruffy.

With the two kids finishing school and sixth form early it did mean that Laurel had a summer of company so he was not best pleased when the kids went off to college and university, fortunately they are both local so he's not alone for long and with my wife working on the estate he is only alone for a few hours at max but a Kong soon see's him happy when we leave and to be honest he doesn't notice whilst he is distracted. Like his owners he loves his food but is very polite with it although strange noises emminate from his throat out of a love of the food.

He has managed to stay well apart from one brief injury which typically occurred on the change over day of insurance so immediately we changed back to M&S just in case although that was £30 a month more than the new company (thanks Laurel).

Laurel has now settled with other dogs and actively seeks them out when he can, fortunately over the summer he really has improved his recall skills well I say recall I mean focus, he still has the occasional selective hearing when he is desperate to go seek another dog but as long as the dog is quiet we can sneak past sometimes without him knowing.

We are all still amazed at how he copes and it really is fascinating to watch him deal with things, to watch him map out a new place in a couple of minutes is stunning and how he copes with small bridges etc is just fantastic. People are always amazed at how he copes and watches with his ears, the amount of people that are shocked when we explain that he is blind is staggering, the only reason they ask is becuase of that infamous blue sheen across hs eyes, certainly nothing about his behaviour gives his disability away.

He is a natural at running by the side of the bike when we go for a ride, not once have we had a problem with him running into the bike, I swear someone has already trained him on that as he stays the same distance away all the way (apart from stopping to sniff).

He has mastered catch with his rope and a few other toys and knows the rooms around the house by voice, which helps when he can't find a specific toy as we can tell him what room to go and look in.

Real credit goes to my daughter, Becky who has spent a lot of time with him this summer and has really helped him settle and learn things.

We have picked up a few tricks to try and stop this nipping of visitirs when they come round some of the information Paul shared with us on the Knowing Your Collie course has really helped us understand why Loz is behaving like he is at times, for instance NEVER all stand up at the same time, panic sets in that his flock is out of control and that we need calming down, that's when the barking and nipping starts.

All in all what a wonderful summer and what a wonderful dog he is, he is doing really well and we are so pleased we got over our shallow humand view about his blindness and adopted him, he might not be the loving dog that people dream of and is mister independent but he gives you a stand up cuddle when invited and is my best friend.

All he asks for is routine, a river to swim in a good walk and most importantly food on time. It's such a great sight to see when he walks himself home 40 yards from home, past three houses and straight down the path past the cars and if it's morning his breakfast better be ready :-)

Letter from Chip 'Chipolata-Trouble-Starter' (now Jasper) & family

Hi Paul, Sarah and Julia

Jasper says a big hello to you all, and hopes you are all well.

Well it has been two and a half weeks since we have had Jasper, and every day brings something new.

Last night he had his first cup of tea from Chris, this is something he always used to do with Tessi and Chris has been trying Jasper but he has been scared of the mug. Last night he actually tried it and loved it. Chris wasn’t expecting him to drink so he offered him a full mug, wrong move on Chris’ part as Jasper drank the whole mug. Later on he tried a bit of Chris’ fresh orange juice too.

I have a poorly knee at the moment which meant I couldn’t get back to sleep this morning when Chris went to work at 4.00 a.m. Tedi took his usual place in bed, on his back, feet in air and I called Jasper (who has now claimed the bottom of the bed) and he wriggled up the bed like a worm, squashed between Tedi and me, put his head on Tedi’s belly and we all had a big cuddle.

Jasper is now loving cuddles and belly rubs, up until Monday you could only stroke him if he came to you, now we can go up to him and he loves the cuddles. We have yet to have licks and kisses, or hear him bark but am looking forward to those things happening.

Jasper late last week decided he didn’t like the look of our sofas whilst we were at work, and promptly shredded them!!! Chris came home to a winter wonderland in the living room, with sofa stuffing resembling snow!!!! Luckily we are insured. Tedi and Jasper now stay in the kitchen and hall when we are at work, firstly with Tessi’s fabric cushion (now with holes in and stuffing out but mendable) and now with hard plastic beds and vet bedding in them so it is nice and warm. Plus tons of toys and chews.

Jasper is coming on outside as well. On our walk last night he saw bikes, but these are no longer bicyle monsters but just things to be weary of. All in all good progress all around. I have lost a little bit of weight with all the extra walks and Tedi is firming up too.

I am taking lots of photos and when I get them developed will send you some.

Rest assured we are looking after him, and we adore him, as does Tedi. We are off to the seaside this weekend with a very very very long lead so he can run on the beach.

Hope all the Wicceways dogs are doing well.

Hi Paul and Sarah

Just an update on our 2 adopted collies Blondie and Coco we have found that they did not respond the same to those names and Coco is now Millie which she was in Ireland, this happened during conversation and when we said she used to be called Millie she responded immediately and Blondie was similar, I kept saying that she was as good as gold which she is so now she is called Goldie to which she responds.

I firstly thought I had filled in all the escape holes only to find another so now the whole length of the lower part of the hedge has chicken wire the full 20 metres, so now nothing can escape.

We started as with our last dogs and left them in the kitchen all secured as we thought only to relent and buy 2 cages which more or less solved the problems overnight, about 2 more nights with Millie and she soon settled and of course Goldie was her usual self as good as gold.

We bought a boot cover because of problems there the first week, but we have been taking them in the car to various places and when we arrived went for a walk and this we have been doing for nearly 2 weeks and they have responded well.

They have really settled well so much so that we decided to let them off the lead a little early whilst down the old railway line walk the other side of Arthingworth and walked a good 2 miles off the lead without any problems, we have to watch them with other animals bicycles and cars at speed which scares them and they will get used to in time. We are careful where we let them off and keep them close to us giving them the treats. We find that they are both good with people but other dogs we are introducing them to slowly, on our walk this morning we met at least 8 dogs with their owners and they are starting to show signs of socialising. They spend most of their time in the back garden running up and down and lying in their favourite spot under our large Rhododendron.

We will be taking them off to Shropshire at the end of September for 2 weeks for walks in the hills a beautiful part of the country , which we are really looking forward to, and if we get some good photographs we will send them to you.

We’ve had Angel six months now and not a day goes by when we don’t think how lucky we are to have such a wonderful dog, so we thought we would send you a few photos taken over the last six months.

Angel has settled in nicely and goes every Friday evening to Misfits Dog Training in Wickenbrook. She passed her Bronze Kennel Club Good Citizen Award a couple of months ago and we plan on continuing her training as she does not like small dogs at all and we are currently working on this problem.

Everywhere we go Angel comes too. She travels really well and seems to enjoy visiting different places.

Hope you like the photos. We will send more in a few months if you want and keep you informed of her progress.

Hi Sarah and Paul,

Just wanted to update you on Oliver. We wrote just before Christmas and he was doing very well. Since then we have joined an agility club, they do not compete but do it for fun. They also have a display team which they have asked Ollie to join. He loves agility and gets so excited about it every week. Maybe once he gets even better at it we might enter him in a few agility competitions, I think he would really enjoy it as he loves all the attention he gets from everyone else when hes top of the class.

He also recently went to a fun dog show where he came second in best rescue and was very pleased with that, the judge was smitten by him, although we think he should have come first. He also got a rosette for completing a series of mini games and obstacles, and he had the second highest score. hes a little star and we cant remember what it was like before we had him.

He had a bit of a poorly back recently and wasn't his usual self, he wasn't running around and going up the stairs. The vet said he probably twisted it when catching his ball and that it was quite common. But hes a lot better now and is back to his usual running and jumping that he loves.

I have attached a few photos, not sure if I've done it right. Please let me know if there are any problems with them.

Dear Sarah and Paul

I thought I'd send you an update following Bella's visit to the vet
yesterday for stitch removal.

When the nurse and I were running through her general health prior to
her op, I mentioned that she doesn't seem to have the stamina you'd
expect in a 14 month old collie, in that after racing after a toy or
whatever, she has to flop down each time. Iain, the vet who did her
wibblies, when told of this, gave her good check over and found her
heart rate to be significantly elevated, but given the stressful
situation she was in, wanted to check it again when her stitches were
removed and I was with her.

Her pre sedation blood test was absolutely fine and when he listened
to her heart yesterday he said that was fine too, with a very good
rhythm. However, when we discussed how she is on exercise, he thinks
she has got some obscure metabolism disorder which stops her muscles
getting the glucose they need for what he calls explosive activity i.e
chasing after toys, birds etc and hence she has to rest her leggies.
She's absolutely fine on steady walks - in fact we did 6 or so miles
this morning on our regular weekly get together with my school friends
- she was tired this afternoon and went to bed instead of helping me
cut the grass, but otherwise OK and we've played hide and seek indoors
this evening.

When Iain described it thus, it all tallied with what I observe in
her. It's as if her body can't keep up with the demands placed on it
and she has to flop out for a bit. She's not distressed at all and
not breathless in any way. He said that she could have tests to
determine exactly what is going on but they are long and drawn out,
involve treadmill exercise and blood tests to eliminate each
condition, one at a time, and at the end of it all they mightn't be
able to offer treatment in any case. Iain's advice (and I have huge
faith in him as he cared for Cass like she was his own) is to manage
her exercise regime so she isn't faced by 'explosive energy
requirements', in other words long steadily paced walks are good but
toy or any other chasing games should be considerably restricted. Of
course if there is any worsening of it, then we will think again with
regards to tests etc.

At my age, I wasn't planning on scampering around doing agility or
flyball so the long steady walks suit me well and we have a variety of
places to choose from. I'm just so thankful, if it is going to be an
ongoing problem she's got, that she's not struggling to earn her keep,
(which she wouldn't be able to do) on a livestock farm, and that she
can do as much or as little as she wants with me. I was just SO proud
of her yesterday morning when we had a walk along the banks of the
Cut-off channel at Denver. She was off lead, we came round a bend and
50 yds ahead was a beautiful female roe deer on the path, looking at
us. I told Bella to 'Wait' and, as she looked at me saying 'Do I
really have to?', the deer took off into the bushes and still B
waited, bless her, despite quivering with anticipation. Lots of
treats! In fact she shared a custard tart with me at Denver Windmill
tea room!

I love her to bits and she looks so smart without those blooming
wibbly wobblies. Dear Cass saved my life when my grief overwhelmed me
in the early days and dear Bella has given me my life back.

Arrived home safely she was sick in the car must be nerves but now she's wandering around the house as if she's been here for ages. Tried to give her a bath as shed rolled in her sick but she was a little afraid so I've washed her back legs down for now. She's had a bark inspected our back garden and has managed to gel with Archie extremely well. Both Wendy and myself would like to thank you for allowing us to take Evie on I think she's going to be one very happy dog

Hello Sarah and Paul,

Its been a long time since I wrote though I still keep up occassionally with
the website and the three of us continue to subscribe each month!

I now have a more suitable garden for Beautiful Bea, lawn, extended for her,
and a more normal garden with flower beds and grass paths. Bea absolutely
loves her new, not so new now, home. There are lovely walks to be done
mainly over fields and we go up the drive of Kentwell Hall every day and
then over the fields. She is a very happy girl. She is still a bit of a 'Madam' and is now much more affectionate, much
loved by all.

The main reason for writing is to say we are in Cornwall again during
September in Port Isaac, a lovely house overlooking the sea.
Bea loves the seaside and its her holiday too, she loves digging in the
sand, even tries it in the garden!!!!!!!

So, do hope all the wonderful volunteers continue with the good work, in
these difficult times it gets harder, the other animal rescue place I
support are finding it difficult as all charities are.

So, hope your Funday goes well, I will be checking on line.

Well we have had Rocky for almost a year now. I have tried several times to email photos but my ancient computer wouldn't co operate. I think i might have round a way. I will only send a few as it takes so long!
He is very happy here and has us fully trained now. He loves the water and we take him to Dedham to swim in the River Stour quite often but he also loves the sea. We took him camping last August in Rutland. He wasn't sure about the tent at first but we got him in eventually. He is going on holiday with us to Wales this year so will make sure and take lots of photos.

Just to let you know that Milly is doing so well.

Eating Arden Grange food and wolfing it down.

Wish she was a couch potato- now loves 2 x 1hr full on walks a day then comes home and would play ball until she dropped. She does now come in when we call her in rather than shouting for us to come outside and play! We just find her ball everywhere we turn inside! Once she realises that we really aren't going to play 24/7 she accepts and goes into couch potato mode.

She hasn't got onto the furniture once- her favourite spot is on the wider turning stair at the bottom- where she can keep an ear/eye on everything that is going on and risk a sleep because she won't miss anything- or she comes to lie across our feet until it's time to come up to her bed

Recall is coming. It's better if we don't play ball on the walk because she doesn't want to stop. She doesn't attempt to run away- just reverses a few steps-repeatedly so that you can't put her on the lead! She is also savvy and won't get tricked by being given a treat- although she comes for them during the rest of the walk! When we carry on walking she follows reluctantly- but continues with the reverse steps when she thinks you might have another go at putting the lead on.This now happens very rarely- just wish had more idea when might happen!,

She is so wary of of so many things- that I'm not sure how used she was to walks in her former life . She loves going on her lead the for security!. She is really off her stroke when we walk past the sheep- especially when they baa,,,,,

She loves hiding in the long grass- first time she did it I couldn't work out how I could have lost her in 30 seconds,She lies asolutely still so that she can leap out as you get level with her- and won't move when you call because she's hiding! Sometimes you can just see the tips of her ears or end of her tail.

We feel we are so lucky to have her. I keep looking - hoping that Bruno has his forever home. Hope it happens soon. He was lovely but just too strong for us. Think Rosie's haircut really suits her.

Just to let you know Birch is doing really well - he is beginning to put on weight and is gradually feeling more at home each day. He gets on well with Bella our other collie and has been out for a walk in Hastings Country Park today. He is gaining confidence each day and it's lovely to see him gradually coming out of himself and starting to enjoy life. He is such a gentle boy and we introduced him to some of the family yesterday, including other family pet dogs and especially our 3 and 1 year old grandsons and he loved it. Hope you & all your four legged friends are keeping well?!

Its our anniversary!!!!!!! It has been a year to the day since we adopted Zippy, how time flies!! We can honestly say if we had searched every rescue in the land we couldn't have found a better dog to join the family. Zippy is just perfect....he is bright, fun, clever, playful, energetic, super quick to learn (all the usual wonderful collie traits) but most of all he has such a hilarious character....he really does do some comical things, he makes us laugh every day, hes soooo cheeky!! He loves his agility & will be making his debut at Capable Canines next month in the 'not for competition - young uns' class. There is only one thing Zippy loves more than agility & that's swimming with his housemate & adopted brother Robbie, which he does every day! We are very fortunate to have beautiful countryside with lakes on our doorstep & Zippy can never get to his swimming spot fast enough.....or should i say diving spot, as he always has to launch himself into the water after the ball making an enormous splash! He really is perfect! Wondered if you ever hear from the family who adopted his brother Matty, would love to know how he turned out?

Anyway both, keep up your excellent work......& to anyone else who may read this.....DON'T BREED OR BUY WHEN STRAY DOGS DIE .... RESCUES RULE!!!!!!!!!

Hi Sarah and Paul,

Just to let you know Jed is doing really well. Had a EUREKA moment last week. After 4 weeks of strategically placed dog treats on our down stairs, Jed finally gave in and went DOWN the stairs for the first time (he’s never had a problem coming upstairs). His fear of going down the stairs has completely disappeared. He rushes out into the garden to play football with Oli, Scarlett and Alice or jump over the made up assault course. Had a few problems with him being scared of little dogs and behaving aggressively, but have distracted him with a shaker (rice in a water bottle) which has worked wonders and he now has lots more small doggy friends (especially Molly the Jack Russell).

You mentioned that we could order a longer collie lead from yourselves which is specially made for you. Please could you e-mail us details including prices and postage etc.

Hope you and the dogs are doing well, love the updated website, will e-mail you some more photos soon.

She is gaining in confidence every day and improving on the good work you started with her. She was very nervous to begin with, particularly with normal household noises, and scared of the noises of traffic, trains and helicopters on walks but now she ignores these and really enjoys her outings - especially playing with all the other dogs we come across. She continues to eat well and is beginning to respond to her name! She loves playing with her toys and running round in the garden.

Everyone we meet falls for her as she is so friendly and so affectionate.

Hello there guys and gals.

Well, it's been a busy few weeks here. I've not been a well dog - got some dicky tummy probs, but the vet is sorting me out and I really like the tinned dog food us folk with delicate tummies have to have for a while. Mum says I hoover it up. Dunno what she means - I don't like the hoover.

Anyway, having to go and see the nice vet man - he's really good at strokes and fuss and kisses and giving treats - isn't what I wanted to tell you all about. Remember I told you that mum and dad were going to take me to a beach when I was good off the lead? Well, we went to a big beach called Holkham beach today and it was fantastic! We had to walk on the lead through a wood first but then when we got to the beach there was a humungous amount of space and lots of other dogs and I ran round and chased Katie all over the place (except when she went in the water - she knew she was safe there 'cos I don't like water, especially if it has soap in it ) and then - I was stopped in my tracks.

Remember I told you about these amazing creatures called ducks that can fly and then land on the water? Well, on this beach there were two huge ducky things that were really bright colours and flying high and then swooping down. Two chaps seemed to be telling them what to do, but I don't know how they did it. Mum and dad laughed at me and said something like 'He likes the kites. He thinks they're birds.' I tried really hard to catch them but they were too high and too fast.

Anyway, after a long time running around (about 45 minutes, actually! Mum) I began to slow down a bit 'cos I realised I had to walk back as well. Boy, was I glad to get back to the car and the teashop! I've slept a bit this afternoon, but now it's time to go out and play Grrrr with Katie 'cos it's a bit cooler now and we've both got some energy back.

Mum says she forgot the camera but will take some photos next time we go. She's taken a photo of me having a breather after an energetic game by the greenhouse..... honestly, don't these women take advantage of a chap when he's feeling not at his best?!

Firstly thank you for all your help and advice yesterday and for matching us with Merlin, he is fab, he has such a similar temperament to our old dog Whisky it is uncanny!!

Got home safely despite traffic jams on the M6 and panic that we would not get to petrol station before running out of fuel!!

Merlin was excellent at your vets, he dragged me inside (very different to Jessie who we have to pull through the door at our local vets) and did not have so much as a whimper when he had his injection and micro-chip.

He has settled in really well, has eaten all his meals, enjoyed his walks and slept soundly last night, although was wide awake at 6.30 this morning when Ethan decided it was time to get up!!

He has had lots of visitors today and has been a pleasure, everyone has fallen in love with him, he really is a softie!! We left him for a hour and half this afternoon and despite him looking out of the window as we drove away, we got home and he was fast asleep next to Jessie.

Thanks again for all your help, I will take some photos over the next few days and send them through.

Hello all,

I thought you'd like an update on Mr. Jenkins (who we've had nearly six years now! Wow!)

Last Thursday he expanded his Pets as Therapy role by giving a talk to 23 local Brownies...well, I gave the talk, he stole the limelight! He spent an hour and a half with kids draped all over him, arms around his neck, heads on his tummy, stroking his paws, stroking his tail and he wasn't bothered for a moment, just lay back and took it all in his stride. Actually, I'd say he was schmoozing, which extended right up to the parents coming to pick up their children.

There was one little girl who was frightened of dogs, and by the end I couldn't tell her apart from any of the others, she even dragged her father over to say hello. Needless to say I'm very proud. I was also pretty tired, although Mr. J wasn't, despite being 10 now. The first thing he did on getting home was to pick up his favourite toy and throw it in my direction. I think he was pretty proud of himself too though and to this end we've been promoted to regular speakers for the charity!

Hope all is well with you both, and that the summer brings lots of wonderful new homes for your current and future broods!

Dear Sarah & Paul

Just a quick note to thank you for our visit Thursday.
I really enjoyed the chat and hope we didn't hold you up too much.

Bella absolutely loves the raggy tugger - it's the fave toy at the moment and when she tires of tugging and chewing it, she wears it round her neck like a tie!!

We've had a minor try with the weave poles and I think she shows great initiative in that she'll duck round the end to get to the treat to save any unecessary effort going through the poles. It's a bit like when I hide treats or toys under pots. She doesn't always bother with sniffing them out, she just knocks each pot over in turn till she finds the one with the treat under. Such intelligence!

Having told you that she rarely barks, on our return to the posh site Thursday, she spent the rest of the day gobbing off at anything and anybody that moved! Bless!

I intend speaking to our vets this week to arrange getting her "wibbley wobblies" removed although I shall feel like I'm abandoning her there when she goes in for it. I guess an excuse for even more cuddles and treats!

Bless you both for letting me adopt her and for the amazing work you do for these gorgeous dogs.

Just a quick email to let you know how well Sam- now called Seve- is getting on.

He was brilliant on the journey home and sat looking out the window most of the way. He's a massive admirer of our guinea pigs and now has a little spot by the window where he sits and watches them.

We took him to the woods yesterday where he also discovered squirrels! He was a bit baffled though when they vanished up a tree. He now also jumps in and of the car with no worries.

Dear all,
Amy (previously known as Annie) has fitted in beautifully since she came to join our household at the end of February. She soon got to grips with the strange Yorkshire accent and made more new friends at dog school (Wakefield Dog Training Club). She is a bit of a super-star with her 'watch' etc. Some of the other dogs thought she was a bit of a show-off - well they had been going ages and still couldn't handle the gate routine.
Thought you would like to know that the lovely Amy (aka Annie) passed her Bronze good citizen award and has graduated to the Silver class with the big dogs. She is taking it all in her stride and loves learning new things. When she is a bit older she wants to start the agility training - with her lovely long legs and agile frame she will be very good. I have attached a photo of Amy proudly displaying her rosette and certificate.

just wanted to give you an update on Bob, he's settled really well and enjoying his new life, he loves hiding his bones in his sandpit and playing fetch with the ball something we thought would be a long time coming we feel really blessed to have him in our lives he is a great family pet now and is thoroughly spoilt!

I just wanted to ask anyone if they have any tips on lead pulling we are on our second round of dog training but it hasent helped so far so after our own research we are stopping each time he pulls and then giving a treat when he comes back it takes ages to get anywhere but we are slowly making improvements, the other thing is any advice on car sickness we have tried herbal tablets on an empty stomach but that did'nt work were going away in the summer and any advice would be great.

Hello Paul and Sarah.

This is to let you know already how well Molly and Bruce are settling in already. (Bit damp round the eyes there when we left, weren't we Paul?) Don't worry, I told you they'd be happy.

Bruce settled down to sleep quite quickly on the journey. Molly, though, although apparently quite calm on the surface, was very rigid, and what in the field of child protection, we call "frozen watchfulness". However, she relaxed into sleep at Leicester.

When we got home , they had a snuftie round the orchard. Had a wee, had a good drink and their tea. As for Pinkie, the cat, She rubbed up against them and they licked her and she walked with them round the garden.

Where have they landed?

In a cottage with lots of exciting crannies to explore. a wilderness garden and orchard exiting onto a back lane where there is a badger sett, then miles of fields and bridle paths to roam without having to to touch a road.

Already, there are Aunties galore coming to admire them. Believe me they're going to be o.k.

We think you are doing the most fantastic job down there and I'm going to make you one of my charities.

A few pictures of me, you knew me as Sheppie but my name is now Millie.

My family are OK and welcomed me so I feel as though this has always been my home. I enjoy taking them for walks and running with other dogs. Of course I am came to my new family already fully house trained, and I have shown them that I already knew how to ‘sit’ and they seem to understand me when I paw for a snack. I never responded to Sheppie but I quite like Millie.

I love chasing birds, squirrels and foxes that come into my garden and barking at any strange noises especially at 3 oclock in the morning. The only problem I have is that I am is easily car sick but fortunately the field where I go for walks is very nearby. A bit of a shame as they tell me there are many lovely walks just a short ride away – so we are working on it and I am not afraid of jumping into the car anymore and with a bit more practice Im sure I will be OK.

Say ‘Hi’ to my other friends and hope they have found nice homes.

Hi Sarah & Paul

Well! We made it! Bella, Norman the camper & I got to Northumberland and Cumbria, shadowing the Hadrian's Wall walkers.

My friends walked 84 miles, little Anna their dog (loosely based on a chihuahua) did approximately 70 of those and joined us in the camper for the rest, while Bella & I travelled 799 miles in 16 days.

We had such an adventure - Bella dipped her toes in the North Sea, made lots of friends both doggy and human, saw lots of sheep and sampled sheep poo!

When it was possible to park Norman safely, we walked some parts of the wall and joined the walkers for the final blast into Bowness, in a gale and pouring rain. We were disappointed though when, having walked 2 miles to view Vindolanda Roman Fort, we found it to be dog-free and hence had to toil 2 miles back uphill in the teeth of a gale (which pinned back the girl's ears) to Norman, without a glimpse of all that history!

There were working dogs on some of the farms we camped at, but B has decided working for a living is not something she's particularly interested in - she feels she was destined for a life of luxury and being waited on! We were both weary when we got home but she's so taken with camper life now that if the door is open, she takes up residence on her bunk, and we've already done another short trip locally plus there's another planned.

After some 25 years of campervanning and caravanning with my late husband, embarking on these trips in Norman has been a milestone for me. and Bella's company has made them joyful, entertaining and action-packed! So many people stop to talk to her and therefore me, it's impossible to feel alone. She makes me laugh and has, quite honestly, transformed my life.

It’s party time! Today marks one year since I came to live here with Mam and Dad.

This time last year they arrived at Wiccaweys Border Collie Rescue Centre in Northants to meet a rescue collie they had seen on the internet. He was absolutely beautiful but Mam and Dad did not think he was the right dog for them somehow, and anyway he wasn’t remotely interested in them either! They were very disappointed, but they were asked if they would like to see any other dogs while they were there and I was brought out to meet them - a big hairy Irish scruffbag with a limp and several teeth missing who had had both back legs broken in a road accident.

They took me home! At first I was bewildered and so scared. Where was I now? When I arrived at my new house it took Mam twenty minutes to coax me in through the front door.

But hey, that was a year ago! I am no longer Sad Swift. These days I am Super Smiling Swifty, the great big softie! Yay!

We would all like to thank the lovely people at the rescue centre and the vets in Limerick, and Sarah and Paul and all the helpers at Wiccaweys. If it wasn’t for them I would definitely not be here today (gulp!)

So to celebrate it’s champagne all round - in the proper glasses! Pop! Clink! Cheers! Love Swift xxx

Hello Sarah & Paul

Doesn’t seem possible it’s a week since we brought Lottie home. We are all settling into our new situation. To start with Lottie was very jumpy, but already she’s getting used to us and her surroundings. Everyone thinks she is great, my son is over the moon!!!!! We will obviously need to seek obedience classes, but I felt let her settle more before introducing her to yet another unusual experience. I’m sure she will respond very well after a little while. Already she has learned basic commands so she will be a good subject to teach. She certainly knows how to get your attention. My life at the moment centres around her every whim!!!!! The crate works a treat, no accidents at all, perhaps I am speaking somewhat prematurely. The signs are good.

The wild life around the garden does not know what has hit them. Lottie thinks everything is for her amusement.

Hi Paul and Sarah

Well is been a year since Jess selected us to be her mum and dad and we thought it was time for an update

She has really settled in well now and has really got over her issues with traffic and only the loudest motorbike start her urge to chase. She also like to get out for her walks around the village marching a head of slow old daddy and chasing after the rabbits (she can’t catch them mind, but she loves trying).

She still comes into work with me and enjoys her time in the office and getting fuss from all the folks there as well as the odd tit bit.

Feels like we have had her forever and she had really settled in well. We have had several trips up to Scotland where she gets on well with her pal Charlie the patterdale terrier as well as our nephews who she is so gentle with.

She certainly has come on leaps and bounds over the last year and is a truly special dog. She won the most improved dog at her doggy classes ad won a rosette (picture attached with her special costume for the doggy party she went as a Jester).

Sorry have not managed to download the pictures of Jed yet. He’s had a really busy day. Been on lots of walks. Went over the Hills and Hollows (a really long walk over fields), he slept for a solid 30 minutes when we got back. He made us all laugh by trying to dig a hole in the carpet to bury his little chew bone. He’s made friends with a female whippet – there was a lot of neck rubbing going on. Tess has been with us for a year now and I thought you might like to see what she looks like now.

She seems to have been part of the family for ever and has settled extremely well. she must be one of the friendliest dogs ever. People dogs and other animals are sen as friends. Children allegedlly frightened of dogs, seem to sense that she will do no harm. The only thing that spoils the picture is the new neighbours cat that refuses to play. The rotten thing will position itself between her and the back door and then we have to escort her in!

Hello there, Sarah and Paul and all my doggy friends at Wiccaweys!

This is Shadow checking in. I used to be called Spock but my new mummy and daddy have started calling me Shadow cos I'm always trotting around after them like a little, well... er... shadow. (I don't know what that means but I've heard them laugh when they say it and I know laughing is a good sound so it must be a good name.) (AND every time they say Shadow and I go and investigate, I get a treat. So I'm not complaining!)

My new big brother (well, HE thinks he's a big brother - I've already shown him who's the boss around here) is called Silver and he's very sweet and funny and quiet. He's being very patient with me and showing me how things are done around here, cos he knows what to do and I haven't got a clue yet. However, I've learned how to play with Silver in the garden and I even pinch his ball sometimes when he's not looking. (Or even when he is!) (And he's very nice about it.) He's also shown me how to get mummy and daddy to take us for lots of nice walks.

I was a bit frightened in the car when I left Wiccaweys but I sat on Silver and that made it OK and he didn't mind. (I really must tell him one day what a nice chappy he is.) Now I quite like the car cos this morning it took me to Hanchurch Woods and I had a lovely time with LOADS of new smells and new doggy bottoms to sniff.

My mummy and daddy are very nice (they told me to write that) and are amazed at my cuddle-capacity! They're not too keen on the fact that I take a short-cut over the bed instead of going round it, but hey... I'll let them teach me otherwise when I'm good and ready. My mummy and daddy use a lot of words to talk about me (and I don't understand many words yet) but they sound very much like 'lovely' and 'funny' and 'intelligent'. Oh, and 'mischievous'. Ha.

I'm having a bit of a problem writing this cos my paws keep slipping off the keyboard. But I can't ask mummy for help cos she doesn't actually know that I've nipped onto her chair to write this!

Letter from Tigger & family

Hi there, guys.

Remember me? Tigger - the one who disappeared just over two weeks ago.

Well, first of all sorry I wasn't around to welcome you home, Auntie Sarah. I'm jolly glad you're feeling better and you'll just have to imagine the big juicy licks you'd have got if I had been there.

Mum(Ann) and Dad(Barry) say I have to be extra nice to Uncle Paul who sorted everything out and let me come back to Norfolk with them. He was jolly helpful, even though he must have been very busy and worried about Auntie Sarah.

It seems ages ago but mum says it was Good Friday - two weeks ago - well I'm not too good on time but it was a good Friday for me 'cos I got a new home. We drove home to a village in North West Norfolk and I shared the back seat with a pretty little lass named Katie.More of her later.

Mum and Dad said I was jolly smelly and needed a bath and a haircut. Not the most friendly thing to say to your new best pal, but they persuaded a lady to give me a really good haircut to get rid of the tangles and then I had a bath. I feel so much cooler - just as well, 'cos it's getting hot round here. Although only part collie - part man of mystery. Mum and Dad don't care what I am, they just think I'm the bee's knees.

Katie - that's the other dog who lives here - and I spend ages running round the garden, playing ball, tugging ropes and furries (she likes teddies - huh, typical girl) and then running in for a big drink and a cuddle. We have playfights sometimes, but I always win them 'cos I'm bigger. She's sneaky, though and beats me at other things without me realising how. I've offered her the chance to be the luckiest girl in the world (my girl) but she says, 'Paws off, you creep'. I won't give up, though.

There are lots of other dogs in the village and I meet loads when we go for walks. My faves are a little Schnauzer called Millie and and big golden lab retriever called Maddie - but I think that would be a bit ambitious on my part. There's loads of ducks in our village - they're fascinating creatures - you run at them and they fly up in the air AND THEN THEY LAND ON THE WATER OF ONE OF THE PONDS! When I'm allowed off the lead I'm going to have a go at that. We go for walks round the ponds and by an airfield and often through lots of fields - there's loads of hares and rabbits and even deer if I keep quiet, but I get excited and frighten them off.

Katie says that we'll go to Holkham beach soon. She says it's HUMUNGOUS and there's lots of space and puddles of seawater (?) and mum and dad walk for ages. It's all right for her - she's allowed off the lead, but I'm not ready for that yet. I'm learning, though. I'm good at sitting and not bad at waiting. I'm beginning to understand 'Give' and I know 'No' , 'In' and 'Out'. That's usually when the hoover or the lawn mower is going to be switched on, 'cos I don't like either of them.

I've learned how to have my teeth cleaned, too - with a brush and great tasting stuff that I lick off my beard afterwards.

Mum's sent you some photos so you can see how I've changed. There's one of me killing a tennis ball the day after I got to my new home - well, what else was I supposed to do with it? I can't hold a racquet, now can I? There's one of me and Katie playing tug the same afternoon. Then there are three of me with the new haircut. One is me having fun with a chew before I knew how to have my teeth cleaned. One is me sitting by the door to the garden welcoming folk in. The last one is me and my mate Katie on the lawn, looking cute and innocent. Do you think we'll fool anyone?

Anyway, time to go. Katie needs me. (I wish)
